Planting the S.E.E.D.S of Indigenous Population Health Data Linkage

The increasing accessibility of data through digitization and linkage has resulted in Indigenous and allied individuals, scholars, practitioners, and data users recognizing a need to advance ways that assert Indigenous sovereignty and governance within data environments. Advances are being talked about around the world for how Indigenous data is collected, used, stored, shared, linked, and analysed.

During the International Population Data Linkage Network Conference in September of 2018, two sessions were hosted and led by international collaborators that focused on regional Indigenous health data linkage. Notes, discussions, and artistic contributions gathered from the conference led to collaborative efforts to highlight the common approaches to Indigenous data linkage, as discussed internationally.

This presentation will share the braided culmination of these discussions and offer S.E.E.D.S as a set of guiding Indigenous data linkage principles.

Speakers

Robyn Rowe is an Anishinaabe-kwe (First Nations woman) and member of Matachewan First Nation with hereditary roots from Teme-Augama Anishnabai (Temagami First Nation) along Lake Temagami in Northeastern, Ontario. She is a staff scientist at ICES Central and the Indigenous Data Team Lead for Health Data Research Network, Canada. Robyn is a PhD candidate in the School of Rural and Northern Health at Laurentian University with a Masters in Indigenous Relations and an honours BA in psychology also from Laurentian University. Robyn's role at ICES and with HDRN aims to advance Indigenous-led initiatives around the appropriate governance of Indigenous health data. Robyn's work prioritizes relationships with First Nations, Inuit, and Métis in order to address governance and sovereignty initiatives that matter to Indigenous nations.
