Description
The Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA) is a large, national, long-term study and research platform of more than 50,000 individuals who were between the ages of 45 and 85 at recruitment, which took place between 2011 and 2015. The CLSA participants will be followed until 2033 or death. The aim of the CLSA is to find ways to help us live long and live well, and understand why some people age in a healthy fashion while others do not. Data was collected from two cohorts: the Tracking assessment (TRM) and the Comprehensive assessment (COM).
Data from the Tracking Cohort is collected through questionnaires administered over the phone, data from the Comprehensive Cohort is collected through both face-to-face questionnaires and physical assessments.
NOTE: In addition to the PopData data access fee, CLSA charges $3,000 for each application. A waiver is available for students and postdoctoral fellows, please contact dataaccess@popdata.bc.ca for more information.

- Inclusions
Participants are given a list of answers to choose from for each question which are then encoded into numerical values (e.g. YES = 1, NO = 2). Open text answers are separately prompted and included in distinct datasets.
Our current holdings include data from the Baseline (2011-2015), Maintaining Contact Questionnaire (2013-2016), and Follow-up 1 (2015-2018) waves for both Tracking and Comprehensive cohorts. Population Data BC also holds mortality data from CLSA’s decedent questionnaire given to family members of deceased participants. All data sets include sampling weights.
CLSA data for BC participants is linkable to other data sources available at POPDATA BC. CLSA data for non-BC participants is non-linkable but available for request.
- Exclusions
Indigenous identity information and other Indigenous variables are not available for request, as well as any personally identifiable information such as names, dates of birth, or full postal codes.
Sub-studies launched by the CLSA (e.g., COVID-19 studies) are excluded from Population Data BC’s data holdings.
