This webinar is part of the Power of Population Data Science Series
The Manitoba Population Research Data Repository (Repository) at the Manitoba Centre for Health Policy (MCHP) is a comprehensive collection of administrative, registry, survey and other databases related to the residents of Manitoba. The Repository (now including over 1800 files from more than 80 different government databases) was developed to facilitate inter-sectoral research. These databases are grouped into six domains: health, education, social, justice, registries, and support files.
The MCHP Concept Dictionary & Glossary system is a resource developed to support research using the Repository. The Glossary contains short definitions for commonly used terms, while the Concept Dictionary provides detailed operational definitions and programming code for measures used in MCHP research. Hyperlinks provide navigation to additional related information.
The MCHP Concept Dictionary and Glossary is designed to:
- retain ‘corporate’ knowledge about changing database holdings and privacy requirements,
- serve as a ‘storehouse’ of working knowledge
- facilitate researcher/analyst communication,
- enhance MCHP’s knowledge translation activities, and
- help communicate the Centre’s work to prospective and established users, and assist in efforts to obtain funding.
With support from the Lupina Foundation, documentation on several key areas: the changing ICD Environment, Health System Costing, and Social Determinants of Health and Wellbeing, was carried out over the 2005-2010 period. Information on new and changing methods has been incorporated, and updating the documentation is a constant task. The use of the Dictionary, both nationally and internationally, has continually increased. The Concept Dictionary should prove to a valuable resource for the SPOR Canadian Data Platform initiative.
The webinar will provide a summary of the IJPDS related article and an overview of the key features associated with the MCHP Glossary and Concept Dictionary. Presenters will describe the process that goes into developing and producing a concept. They will also illustrate the system integration between concepts, glossary terms, publications and other systems/information by providing a live demonstration of the Concept Dictionary.
