Disease processes have patterns and when disease varies in space, spatial patterns are produced. Identifying and quantifying patterns of disease in geographic areas may lead to a better understanding of why a disease occurs. This webinar will focus on some statistical cluster detection tests that can identify geographic areas with a higher prevalence of disease than expected.
This webinar will:
- Describe the popular statistical cluster detection tests, including various spatial scans.
- Discuss considerations of choice in geographic unit and outcome definition.
- Illustrate methods applied to administrative health data in Alberta, including emergency department data.
- Describe challenges in interpretation when methods are applied to health services data.

Dr. Rhonda J. Rosychuk, Ph.D., P.Stat., PStat®(ASA) is Professor and accredited Professional Statistician in the Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Alberta. She is the Lead Biostatistician for the Canadian COVID-19 Emergency Department Rapid Response Network.
Her research activities include statistical methods development, epidemiological studies, and collaboration/consultation with clinical colleagues. Her methods work has focused on disease cluster detection and recurrent events, often applied to emergency department use data.
